This year Kaanapali Fresh’s Progressive Kaanapali theme gives a hint of what to expect – “A Double Culinary Grande with a Shot of Jake”.
Kaanapali’s Starwood sister properties – The Westin Maui Resort & Spa and Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa – team up for a double culinary punch to host a grande event Friday, August 30. Hawaii’s ukulele virtuoso, Jake Shimabukuro, takes to the stage and will pump up the party.
While the exquisite chef/farmer dinners bookend the evening, the journey between the destinations is story-like and just as tantalizing.
Kaanapali has the rare distinction of being home to a historical walking trail. The beach path fronting the resort spans from Canoe Beach (Hanakao`o) on the south to Airport Beach (Kahekili) on the north and includes a vivid history: legends of Maui the demigod, an ancient Hawaiian village, an early 20th century plantation which included train tracks and a logging industry, and in the later 20th century, an airport strip with as many as 60 flights scheduled daily.
While walking from The Westin to Sheraton for the progressive dinner, you will be on the historic trail near the location of what was an ancient Hawaiian ahupua’a (land division system.) A fishing village was nestled here along the beach, farmers cultivated taro and other crops, and beach canoes were housed and used for fishing along the shoreline. The long stretch of sand was used for warrior training and competitive games.
It was the 18th century ruling chief, Kahekili, who excelled in the game of “lele kawa,” or cliff jumping. The tradition still takes place at sunset nightly from Pu`u Keka’a, or Black Rock, fronting Sheraton, where Kahekili himself thrilled onlookers.
But don’t worry, your sunset stroll along the path to your final destination ends on the Sheraton Ocean Lawn before you reach Black Rock. You won’t have to leap the nearly 50 ft. into the ocean to commemorate your evening, but you might want to jump into the party that will no doubt be infused with a “shot” of energy from Jake.
Progressive Kaanapali – “A Double Culinary Grande with a Shot of Jake” is scheduled on Friday, August 30 from 6 to 9:30 p.m. at The Westin Maui Resort & Spa and Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa, part of Kaanapali Fresh 2013.
Tickets to Progressive Kaanapali are $78 and can be purchased at the event link here.
